"I can't wait to eat all the yummy food from our garden!" Micah says. The only problem is that he was convinced that he didn't like most of the vegetables that we were planting: squash (as he calls "squawwsh"), okra, zucchinni (the ones he "didn't like").
This is the first year that Micah has really understood the concept of gardening and been a great helper. I found the perfect unit (on another blog) on gardening where we studied plant parts, soil types, scripture, letters, and other skills.
First, Allen tilled the garden and I planted most of the plants.
Then Micah planted the remainder of the plants.
As we watched and waited it was such a blessing to hear Micah pray that God would send rain so that our garden would grow and we would have food. We believe that it's so important that our children understand that everything we have is provided by God. Secondly, we believe that everything we have is produced through hard work. Tilling, planting, raking, hoeing...that's hard work! Micah understands that food doesn't magically appear at the grocery store. Someone put in a lot of hard work for it to get there.
Proud of the growing garden...
While our plants were growing outside, we also tested some of our seeds inside...peas, watermelon, and eggplant. Micah enjoyed watering these plants each night. He was so excited to see the new growth!
We also put a sweet potato into a cup of water and watched as the plant grew from our kitchen counter to the ceiling!!
Finally, we gather a great crop of vegetables!
Now, Micah has decided that he likes most of the vegetables. Ok well- he only likes squash if it's fried :)
We now have a garden-full of tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, white eggplant, peppers, cantaloupe, and watermelon.
