Motherhood: Servanthood

Career choices.  This is a topic that always stressed me out when I was a teen.  As an 11th grade student in Mrs. Herrington's class, I had to write a paper on this topic and finally (after much grief) decided that I wanted to be a missionary or a teacher.

My life with Christ began shortly after my eighth birthday.  I realized my sin problem and my need for a Savior.   I asked Jesus Christ to be the boss of my life and He has been guiding me ever since.

While agonizing over my career choice as a Junior in high school, I still knew that God would lead me.  I chose to follow Him in the next step.  Those steps took me from Meridian Community College to William Carey University with a degree in Bible.  Then He took me to New Orleans Seminary to study and train to be a full time missionary.   After about two weeks at New Orleans, I was told a storm was coming and we should evacuate.  This storm, Hurricane Katrina, brought me back to my hometown, Meridian and shortly Allen and I started dating.  The next summer Allen and I married and were on the path to bringing up a family.

Six years later, we have three amazing gifts from God.  What about becoming a teacher and missionary?  I struggled with that thought for a while, but God opened my eyes to show me that I AM a teacher and missionary.  Each day I have the opportunity, as a mother, to shape the eternal souls of my children.  Twenty-four hours and seven days a week, I can pour Jesus’ love into Micah, Elizabeth, and Rachel.  I prepare meals, wash clothes, read stories, sing songs, and kiss faces.  Motherhood is servant hood, exactly what Jesus tried to teach us.   I have finally grasp God’s plan for this moment in my life.  I find myself to be busy nearly every minute of the day, but 100% satisfied in my opportunity to be a mother.   Even when we question God’s plan for our future, He knows and He is preparing us one step at a time.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7
These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
